4 performances:

Friday 23rd July at 7:00pm
Saturday 24th July at 2.00pm & 7:00pm
Sunday 25th July at 5:00pm

RITE OF SPRING

Witness Igor Stravinsky’s infamous & iconoclastic ballet The Rite of Spring – one of the most influential performance masterpieces of the twentieth century. Stravinsky‘s avant garde score and Nijinsky’s sacrilegious choreography caused outrage at the Paris premier in 1913. It was the beginning of the modern era, and one of the most famous nights in art’s history.

MATISSE LA DANSE

An original creation based on Matisse’s famous painting ‘La Danse’ from 1910, and some of his other masterpieces.

Matisse La Danse: Rite of Spring, Matisse La Danse & Carmen (excerpt) presented by Byron Ballet at Byron Theatre

“Actually, I live more in Dance: expressive movements, rhythmics, music I like”, said Matisse as a sort of explanation (justification) at the end of his long life. “It was inside me, this dance.”

Matisse witnessed Isadora Duncan dancing (one of the founders of modern dance) and if, indeed, she was a large source of inspiration for his dance, it was also a visit in the south of France, where he witnessed and was fascinated by fishermen dancing their traditional ring that inspired the circle of dancers.

Directed and conceived by Vianney Pinion
Soprano – April Galett, Cello – Ian Knowles, Piano -Ken Naughton.
Music – De Falla, Saint-Saens, Debussy and Lekeu.
