The international festivals presented by Palace are a highlight of the cinematic offerings in Byron throughout the year. \nNext month Palace is presenting the beautiful HSBC German Film Festival in collaboration with German Films.  The 2024 line-up features many superb offerings including six films direct from the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale)\, a selection of the best new German cinema and two exciting retrospective strands – a spotlight on Werner Herzog and a celebration of 70 years of German Films. \nNot to be missed for any budding cinephile\, the festival will also host Kino for Kids which is a selection of new German language films for children and teens\, presented by the Goethe-Institut. Please note that school bookings are available! \n See full program here. \nOPENING NIGHT\nFrom Hilde With Love (In Liebe\, Eure Hilde) is the opening night film. Directed by renowned filmmaker Andreas Dresen\, the film premiered to widespread acclaim at the recent Berlinale and features an extraordinary performance from Liv Lisa Fries as a young woman drawn into the anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II.  This film is a compelling historical drama and a remarkable true story.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, the Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a magical evening under the stars screening the family-friendly film –  Ice Age\, at their outdoor cinema. The Sanctuary will be transformed into a winter wonderland for all the family including the enchantment of a snow machine. \nClaim your spot on a cozy bean bag (for VIP Ticket Holders) or spread out your picnic blanket. Treat yourself to a delicious dinner from the selection of mouthwatering options\, and don’t forget to grab some popcorn for the Ice Age movie. There is also an Igloo Bar available for the adults stocked with amazing local wine\, spirits\, kombucha\, beers and soft drinks.  Food and drink will both be available for purchase throughout the event. \nKicking off at 5:30 PM the film\,  Ice Age features Manny\, Sid\, Diego\, and Scrat on their hilarious prehistoric adventure through the icy wilderness. \nFeel free to bring along your own picnic blanket or bundle up for a Winter Night experience. This Argentinian gem is from acclaimed writer/director Paula Hernandez.  And from Mexico comes Upon Open Sky  (A cielo abierto)\, a searing\, morally thorny tale is set in early 1990s Mexico\, about three siblings who embark on a  journey of revenge.from a screenplay by legendary Mexican scriptwriter Guillermo Arriaga.  The Movie Teller (La Contadora de Películas) is a moving tribute to cinema and the magical power of storytelling\, the star-studded new film from multi award-winning director Lone Scherfig  follows a young woman’s coming-of-age in the rugged heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert in 1966.

SUMMARY:Lismore Lantern Parade
DESCRIPTION:Lismore Lantern Parade is a nationally and internationally recognised\, award-winning annual festival that celebrates the Winter Solstice. The festival is based around a breath-taking parade of lanterns\, light and performance through the main streets of Lismore\, travelling to the banks of the Wilson’s River where a theatrical performance\, fireworks and a spectacular bonfire continue the celebration. It is well worth the 45 minute drive west from Byron along the Bruxner Highway to participate in this festival! \nMarket Delight | 12pm – 9.00pmThe day’s activities begin at 12 noon when the Market delight opens with a fabulous array of delicious regional food\, arts & crafts and some pop-up shops from local CBD businesses. \n​Freedom of Entry Parade | 1.30pm – 2.30pm\nSoldiers from the Lismore based 41st Battalion\, Royal New South Wales Regiment\, will conduct a Freedom of Entry Parade into the Lismore CBD on 22 June 2024 as a part of the lantern festival. The parade marches through the town to the memorial cenotaph and along the route\, the soldiers will be halted as the Local Police Commander and Mayor formally challenge their right of entry into the city. They then continue along the route to Memorial Gardens where the parade will conclude. This is a ceremonial event of deep historical significance. \nKids Fest | 12pm – 4.30pmEnjoy fun and games with Northern Rivers community groups & organisations\, there will be activities\, street performers\, jumping castle and lots more fun. The Summerland Bank will be bringing along their giant street games! They will also be facilitating the Lantern Decorating stall so you can join in the parade!​\n \nThe Heartbeats Festival Stage | 12pm – 9.00pmHeartBeats Festival Stage returns to Carrington Street\, near Dragonfly Cafe. The delightful Little Jarjums from Friends Children’s Centre and friends will join Uncle Roy Gordon to do a special Acknowledgement of Country. Music and performance is drawn from the wealth of talent here on the Northern Rivers. The full HeartBeats Festival Stage program will be released closer to the festival. \n​The Lantern Parade | 5.30pm – 6.30pm\nThe fabulous Lanterneers assemble and depart from Magellan Street through the Heart of the City to completion at Riverside Park. \n\n\n​The Fiery Finale | 6.30pm -7.30pm\nSet on the slopes of the Riverside Park\, there will be gentle pyrotechnics and a big bonfire. For this you will need to bring along blankets and cushions to sit on the grass. Camp chairs are kept to the top of the slope. \nThe After Parties | 8.30pm – late\nSeveral local hotels and venues around the city will be putting on a variety of after parties. \n\n  \n\n​

SUMMARY:The Wake | Brunswick Picture House
DESCRIPTION:An original musical about the Bruns Fishing Fleet. Directed by Ollie Heathwood\nA musical that answers the question “What happened to the fishing fleet in Brunswick Heads?” This exuberant and compelling play celebrates the days when the Co-op was a much-loved meeting place at the heart of the town. Wonderful true stories told by fishermen and Co-op workers are brought to life through songs\, stories\, and images on the big screen. \nResidents\, long term holidaymakers\, and tourists alike are filled with a sense of loss when they go to the marina in Brunswick Heads and see the empty shell of the buildings that once housed the vibrant Brunswick-Byron Fishermen’s Co-Op\, and the wonderful seafood and the fish and chip shop. People ask\, “Where has the fish and chip shop gone\, and why?” and “Why aren’t there any trawlers in Brunswick Heads any more?” \nMany of us have fond memories of taking friends\, family\, and visitors to eat fish and chips at the boat harbour. Many people still go there expecting to be able to throw vinegar-soaked chips to seagulls while they enjoy the beauty of the river and the boats. But sadly\, the Co-op is closed\, and the trawlers are gone. \nThe Wake celebrates and preserves the history of that place\, and the local fishing community whose lives centred around it. \nThis original musical will tell stories based on research and interviews with fishermen\, their families\, and workers at the Co-op. Performances will involve large screen projections\, professional musicians\, singers and actors on stage at the iconic Brunswick Picture House. The play will celebrate the role that the fishing fleet played in our community and tell the story of why there is no longer a fleet in Brunswick Heads. \nPerformances | Saturday 2pm and 7pm | Sunday 4pm and 7pm \nBUY TICKETS
