SUMMARY:Rite of Spring\, Matisse La Danse & Carmen (excerpt) presented by Byron Ballet
DESCRIPTION:WHEN:\nJuly 25\, 2021 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm\n\n\nWHERE:\nByron Theatre\n69 Jonson Street\nByron Bay NSW 2481\nAustralia\n\n\nCOST:\nAdult $36 | Child U16 $28 | Family of 4 $100 | Children ages 1 – 2 years free on lap\n\n\nCONTACT:\n\n\n Email\n Event website \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nByron Ballet Company’s soiree will transport you on a powerful journey through the incredibly fertile world of musical creation in France from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. \n4 performances: \nFriday 23rd July at 7:00pm\nSaturday 24th July at 2.00pm & 7:00pm\nSunday 25th July at 5:00pm \nRITE OF SPRING\nWitness Igor Stravinsky’s infamous & iconoclastic ballet The Rite of Spring – one of the most influential performance masterpieces of the twentieth century. Stravinsky‘s avant garde score and Nijinsky’s sacrilegious choreography caused outrage at the Paris premier in 1913. It was the beginning of the modern era\, and one of the most famous nights in art’s history. \n \nJoin Byron Ballet as they make a tribute to these masters with an original family friendly production that will take you on an unforgettable journey of suspense and sensual beauty. \nDirection/choreography by Yvonne Hall. Extra male choreography by Robert Kelly. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nCARMEN (excerpt)\nByron Ballet presents the passionate love duet from this famous story of love and betrayal. \n \nDon José is hopelessly smitten by the free-spirited and beautiful Carmen\, but when she betrays him for a dashing toreador\, his ardour turns to jealous rage. \nSet to the backdrop of George Bizet’s famous hypnotic musical score. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nMATISSE LA DANSE\nAn original creation based on Matisse’s famous painting ‘La Danse’ from 1910\, and some of his other masterpieces. \n \n“Actually\, I live more in Dance: expressive movements\, rhythmics\, music I like”\, said Matisse as a sort of explanation (justification) at the end of his long life. “It was inside me\, this dance.” \nMatisse witnessed Isadora Duncan dancing (one of the founders of modern dance) and if\, indeed\, she was a large source of inspiration for his dance\, it was also a visit in the south of France\, where he witnessed and was fascinated by fishermen dancing their traditional ring that inspired the circle of dancers. \nDirected and conceived by Vianney Pinion\nSoprano – April Galett\, Cello – Ian Knowles\, Piano -Ken Naughton.\nMusic – De Falla\, Saint-Saens\, Debussy and Lekeu. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nFind out more about Byron Ballet on Facebook \n \n\nTo redeem your Discover NSW vouchers (valid until 31st July) or to book wheelchair accessible seating\, contact the Theatre Box Office:\nMon – Fri\, 10.30am – 1.30pm. SUMMARY:BARKING MAD @ NINBELLA
DESCRIPTION:Barking Mad by Nell Schofield \nIn these barking mad times\, striking bark art reminds us to stay grounded and surrounded by meaningful stories. Ninbella has assembled a powerful stash of bark art works from local and Yolngu artists to help us navigate these extremely strange days. Lae Oldmeadow’s upholstered Hoop Pine bark tree totems stand like ancient sentinels along one wall of the Bangalow gallery. Hand crafted in Blue Knob\, these seven pieces communicate centuries of growth in meticulous interwoven layers. \nOn the opposite wall are ochre paintings on Stringybark panels from Yirrkala\, a remote community 700 kms east of Darwin in Arnhem Land. Featuring the distinctive cross-hatching designs of the region intermingled with black sparkling sand from the surrounding beaches\, these works speak to each artists’ deep connection to country. \nGallery director Grant Rasheed recently travelled to the remote Indigenous community controlled art centre Buku-Larrngay Mulka to personally select these works along with a collection of Larrakitj (memorial poles) which form the centrepiece of the exhibition ‘Barking Mad’.“It was a real honour for me to meet some of these artists personally and to support the wonderful work of the Buku Arts Centre\,” Grant said. The Centre’s name translates as “the feeling on your face as it is struck by the first rays of the sun”\, and there is reference to the eternal cycle of new life and death in these mesmeric pieces. Sacred yet public ceremony designs are interpreted in uniquely individual ways. In response to a challenge about her right to paint the fishtrap imagery of her own clan\, Djirrirra Wununmurra assumed the unique identity of Yukuwa (bush yam)\, a traditional food source whose annual reappearance is a metaphor for the increase and renewal of her people and their land. She explores this by etching her own contemporary take on the ceremonial yam grounds in nearby Stringybark forests onto white earth pigments. \n84 year-old Baluka Maymuru is an “artist of truth”\, practicing his sacred cultural connections on massive panels that depict his homeland estate and its ritual focal point on the Northern entrance of Blue Mud Bay on the Western coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Ritual body painting for cleansing ceremonies has been transferred on to three stunning hollow\, Stringybark poles by Galawupa Garrawurra who died tragically at the age of only 28. \nThese Larrakitj were originally used as ossuaries or bone containers erected as memorials to dead kinsmen but are now widely created as modern sculptures that in Garrawurra’s case display a minimalist elegance. \nAll these works speak to a tradition that stretches way back to the “first sunrises”. It was a Yirrakala bark art work painted in 1963\, now housed in the National Museum of Australia\, that became the first formal assertion of Indigenous native title. Current works from this community continue to express deep cultural integrity and assertion of land ownership. Exhibited in dialogue with Oldmeadow’s spine-tingling totems\, these barks and sculptures present a cheeky yet imaginative play on the use of this most primal material. \n‘Barking Mad’ at Ninbella Gallery\, 19A Byron Street Bangalow. til Mid August \n
