For one as prolific and restless as Harry James Angus\, a whole year of emptiness can change the game in strange ways. \n “The home-time COVID imposed on me was at first very disturbing\, because like a lot of people\, it was the ruination of all my plans\,” he says. “But then something really good happened. Without that crazy cycle of making music and launching it and doing gigs and tours and festivals and all that strategic career stuff… all that was left was me and my creativity.” \nFor the first time in 20 years\, since he hitched his trumpet to a promising jazz party band called the Cat Empire in his hometown of Melbourne\, “I remembered what it felt like when creativity is just a game\,” he says. “It’s like playtime. You make music not because you’ve got a plan\, but because it’s fun.” \nFollowers is the first taste of where that playtime might be leading. A serpentine sideways dance of drums\, piano and trumpet with echo-chamber call-and-response vocals\, it’s a song about social media’s churning kaleidoscope of second-hand views. “Original thought and opinions are harder to come by\,” Harry observes. “It’s harder to arrive at the truth.” \nTo celebrate the release Harry will be playing shows right across the east coast and further afield. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` \nThis concert is presented by Great Southern Nights in association with Story Baker and Byron Theatre \nGreat Southern Nights is a celebration of live music that takes place right across New South Wales. \nThe dynamic event features hundreds of COVID-safe performances at live music venues across Greater Sydney and regional NSW in March and April 2022. \nGreat Southern Nights is a NSW Government initiative\, delivered by Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) to stimulate the revival of the State’s live music\, entertainment and hospitality sectors\, and in turn the NSW visitor economy\, in response to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.\nFor more information\, please visit greatsouthernnights.com.au. \n \nYou can now redeem your Discover NSW vouchers online: \nComplete your ticket selection\, then at the Checkout Payment\, click on Want to redeem a Dine & Discover Voucher? and enter your Discover NSW voucher code.\n(valid until 30 June 2022) \nTo book wheelchair accessible seating\, contact the Theatre Box Office:\nEmail boxoffice@byroncentre.com.au

SUMMARY:Dave Sparks - "Distillation" @ Lone Goat Gallery
DESCRIPTION:‘Reality is such a subjective\, intangible concept. Trying to define it is like trying to lift a handful of water. The only real absolute is point of view\, and changing this is as powerful as changing the object you’re viewing. \nThe most subtle variations of light\, design or angle can transform the bland to the magical. The distillation of a scene can also convert the average into the sublime\, by simply deleting any elements that don’t harmonise with the essence\, the feeling\, of a place. In my work\, the feeling and atmosphere has priority over the actual landscape itself\, and distilling the “essential oil” of a scene is paramount to creating an exciting visual work. \nI also try to evoke a sense of whimsical\, almost hauntingly simplified realism\, an alternate or parallel world\, suggesting a time before man’s interference with the landscape.’ \nDave Sparkes\, 2022

We create the annual V-Day Byron Flashmob Dance Action on FEB 14th on Main Beach\, and after sell out productions of the Vagina Monologues\, we have now e-vulva-ed into the more contemporary and original sell out Vagina Conversations\, women telling their own Vagina stories. These events are fundraisers for the Byron Escape Fund.\n\n\n\nV-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works. The V-Day movement has raised over $100 million; educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it; crafted international educational\, media and PSA campaigns; reopened shelters; and funded over 13\,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic of Congo\, Haiti\, Kenya\, South Dakota\, Egypt\, and Iraq. V-Day has received numerous acknowledgements and awards and is\, one of the Top-Rated organizations on both Charity Navigator and Guidestar. V-Day’s most recent global campaign\, ONE BILLION RISING\, galvanized over one billion women and men on a global day of action towards ending violence against women and girls. Vday.org\n\n\n\nWhat are The Vagina Monologues?\n\n\nHailed by The New York Times as “funny” and “poignant” and by the Daily News as “intelligent” and “courageous\,” The Vagina Monologues\, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler\, dives into the mystery\, humor\, pain\, power\, wisdom\, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world – from Zagreb to Santa Barbara\, from London to Seattle\, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City. Villard Books/Random House first published The Vagina Monologues\, which includes a foreword by Gloria Steinem\, in February 1998. A special edition was released in hard cover and paperback in February 2008 in honor of V-Day’s ten year anniversary.

SUMMARY:Beach Dogs of Byron Bay @ Lone Goat Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Name: Beach Dogs of Byron Bay \nArtist: Rob Scott-Mitchell \nDates: 15 January until 26 February 2022 \nLocation: Lone Goat Gallery\, 28 Lawson St\, Byron Bay \nOpen: 10am until 4pm Wednesday to Saturdays \n  \nAbout: \nLocal artist Rob Scott-Mitchell is an award winning photographer/printmaker/musician/dog-lover\, living in Australia. \nTwo years ago he began documenting his own dogs (and all the dogs on the beach) on his daily beach walks at Belongil beach which became his ongoing series ‘Beach Dogs of Byron Bay’. \nStylistically the work has evolved into shooting largely from the dogs’ P.O.V. Scott-Mitchell loves entering their play spaces\, and responding to their energy and occasional aggression. Rob states “I find this very special in the landscape of the beach\, where the openness of the sky and ever present horizon line\, contrasts beautifully with tight shots that focus intimately on the dogs’ interactions.” \nRob’s photographic goal is to engage fully in the present\, to capture the immediacy of the action and interactions of the animals around him. His work invites you to share in the vitality and joy inherent in each canine interaction captured during his effervescent engagement with them. His almost magical interaction with each animal was profound and is evidenced in this exhibition. \nLone Goat Gallery is a creative initiative of Byron Shire Council.
