Making its Australian premiere after a successful stint at the Italian box office\, writer/director Andrea Di Stefano’s police flick stars Pierfrancesco Favino (The Hummingbird) and tells of an about-to-retire honest cop facing a chaotic\, crime-riddled\, corruption-fuelled situation. \nAlso among the event’s spotlight flicks\, Kidnapped sits in the centrepiece slot\, recreating the tale of the Vatican’s abduction of a young Jewish boy in the 19th century\, plus as the scandal that unsurprisingly followed. As part of a focus on actor\, filmmaker and screenwriter Massimo Troisi\, 1994’s The Postman\, the talent’s two-time Oscar-nominated final film\, will close out the fest with a 50s-set whirlwind of love and friendship. \nOrganised exclusively by Palace\, the festival continues to present the best new contemporary Italian cinema and most cherished classics on the big screen. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed singer-songwriter\, Cruel Sea front man & wildlife ambassador Tex Perkins said he was shocked when he heard that Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital had lost a $6 million funding grant announced by the NSW Government in February. Perkins contacted the hospital’s management team offering his support & has played a central role in the ideation & creation of Wild Aid\, 2023. \nPerkins will reunite with original band members Dan Rumour\, Jim Elliott and Ken Gormly for the tour. Guitarist/keyboardist Matt Walker will take the place of the late James Cruickshank.  The five-piece band will play the exclusive benefit gig as a warmup to their recently announced national  “The Honeymoon is Over” tour. This will be the first show in 10 years for the five-time ARIA award-winning Australian rock band\, The Cruel Sea. \nThe event includes\, as well as Cruel Sea\, a line-up of amazing Australian musicians\, aims to raise awareness and funds for Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital’s life-saving veterinary treatment\, and care for sick injured and orphaned wildlife.  Along with the spectacular concert\, the evening will also feature a live auction of incredible donated items from sponsors and ambassadors of The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital and in addition\, there will be a silent auction available during the event and some other unmissable experiences. \nProceeds from WILD AID 2023 will go directly to providing veterinary treatment and care for sick and injured wildlife admitted to Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital.​ \nSaturday 21 October at the Green Room\,  Byron Events Farm. DESCRIPTION:Penelope McManus has spent the past four years painting her local landscape\, wetlands\, estuaries\, creeks\, rivers and oceans of the Bundjalung Nation\, particularly around Byron Bay (Arakwal Country). \nPenelope first visited and started exploring the waterways\, wetlands and ocean around Byron Bay in 2020. The group comes together to support each other in their practices and hold community events to raise the profile of their members and engage with customers through markets. DESCRIPTION:Between 1890 and 1891\, Monet painted his Haystacks series exploring the nuances of light\, shade\, tone and colour across the seasons and at different times of the day. Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday] 1890 is a glorious work from this series\, filled with dazzling light and luminous colour. \nPurchased in 1979 by the National Gallery of Australia\, Canberra\,  Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday]\, is one of five works shared with the Tweed Regional Gallery as part of the National Gallery of Australia’s Sharing the National Collection initiative. The Sharing the National Collection initiative sees major works of art from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection exhibited across regional and suburban communities. \nThe Monet is available to view at the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah for the duration of 2024. \nJoining the Monet from Saturday 2 March 2024 are three works by iconic Australian artist Margaret Olley\, along with a painting by one of Olley’s favourite artists\, Giorgio Morandi. Directed by Wim Wenders\, Buena Vista Social Club documents a group of legendary Cuban musicians\, some as old as their nineties\, being brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder to record a CD that captured the flavour of a musical style all but forgotten in the west following Castro’s takeover of Cuba \nThe resulting film and album became classics and in 2003 the album was ranked number 260 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time\, one of only two albums on the list to be produced in a non-English speaking country. In 2022\, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry. \nThis special event features a screening of the film on the big screen at Byron Theatre\, followed by a special live performance by Caribé. \nCaribé is a melding of musicians and dancers from Sydney’s Cuban\, jazz and Latin communities.
