DESCRIPTION:Monday 17 June 2019\nA&I Hall Bangalow: 6pm \nLECTURE: Romance and Glamour: Dressing Australian Women during the nineteenth century\nMichael MARENDY \nThis lecture unpacks the story of how Australian women dressed from 1851 to 1901. During the nineteenth century clothing production underwent massive changes due to advances in technology and changes in work practices. These changes lead to the ‘democratisation of clothing’\, mass-produced clothing for all who could afford it. The so-called important aspects – manufacture\, wholesale buying\, distribution and retailing\, remained predominately in the hands of men\, while production\, over the counter selling\, and consumption remained predominantly with women. \nMichael Marendy’s working background has been in four distinct areas: clothing design\, fashion education\, textile conservation and museum curatorship. For 15 years he taught in the TAFE and University sectors\, as well as working as a clothing designer and textile conservator. His PhD from Griffith University\, focused on stories of women in the custom made clothing trade in colonial Brisbane\, and why museums collect\, preserve and exhibit clothing objects designed and made by such women. Michael is currently a conversation and curatorial consultant.

From Janet Swain — singer\, songwriter\, choir maker: \n“Ever since I started making choirs 30 years ago I have attempted to make interesting performances — candlelit 4 hour extravaganzas on dark winter’s nights\, kids choirs\, senior’s choirs\, multicultural choirs\, choirs by the sea\, choirs on tour\, and huge combined choirs for large scale community events. When I first moved to Byron Bay I immediately formed several groups\, culminating in the Song Dynasty Music launch. I travelled to Uganda to work with African Children’s Choir\, and have so far organised three visits to the Byron Shire. When I look back and reflect\, it is such a logical extension that all of this experience\, hard work\, tenacity and belief in the innate goodness of choir singing has culminated in the inaugural Festival of the Voice here in Brunswick Heads. \nCollaborating with Brunswick Picture House — the natural home base for Song Dynasty Music Events — after two years of combined ad hoc choir work and performances\, means that the Festival has its own unique voice — a voice that combines pizzazz and showmanship with heart and community.” \nWith a packed program ranging from Shout Pray Sing to two hugely acclaimed shows by the incredible Michaela Burger to an extensive series of workshops — there is very much something for everyone. This is our 32nd Classic and our 12th Mini Swim. \nEntries now open!  \nThe Programme for Race Day\, Sunday\, 5th May 2019\n7:00am – Check-in and issue of timing bracelet\, swim cap\, event T-shirt or baseball cap at the Surf Club\, Byron Bay on Sunday May 5th from 7am.\n8:00am – The Byron Bay Mitre 10 Mini Swim check-in must be completed in time to allow entrants to walk to Clarks Beach for their race start.\n8:45am – The Byron Bay Mitre 10 Mini Swim staggered start at The Pass area. The actual Start area is dependent on the conditions of the day.\n9:00am – The Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim Classic check-in closes.\n9:00am – Race briefing for the Classic takes place at the tents outside the Surf Club.\n9:15am to 10:00am – Buses leave the Surf Club for the start line at Wategos Beach. A secure baggage storage area is provided round to the right on the road side of the Hall.\n10:00am – Staggered starts for the Classic commences.\nThose who wish to wear clothing to the start for weather protection are reminded there are no facilities for these to be returned to the Surf Club. There will\, however\, be a clothing bin available for those that wish to donate clothing items to local church groups.\n12:00pm – The Presentation is scheduled to start with lucky draws for entrants\, raffle draws\, as well as the Swim Presentations.

As a direct result of Noble’s efforts\, Soul\, Jazz\, Blues and Reggae artists were finding a home\, a promoter\, and a wide audience in Australia for the first time. \nHe began booking international acts in the inimitable Byron Bay (NSW north coast) with the East Coast Blues Festival in 1990\, and became a director in 1993. \nPeter coined the term “Blues & Roots Music Festival” in 1996 to encompass the growing reach and flavour of the festival – a term which would soon find common usage throughout the Australian music industry – typified when within 12 months the ARIA Awards created a Blues & Roots category as one of their major awards. \nHe became a pioneer for Blues\, Jazz\, Roots and Indie Music touring in Australia\, as well as running AIM Records\, which was nominated for two Grammys (Best Tropical Latin Album (Vocal or Instrumental ) for Greetings From Havana – Cubanismo and Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience which won the Grammy for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album in 2008 and earned AIM the accolade as the first and only Australian independent label to win a Grammy Award. \nNoble has worked in many areas of the music business including record producing\, touring artists through his company Bluesfest Touring\, artist management\, setting up the Australian Aboriginal Artists Agency in the early 70’s\, event site development\, and festival presentations throughout Australia and South East Asia. In 2015 the Australian Music Industry Directory listed Peter in the Top 20 of most influential people in the Australian music industry. \nNoble’s long-standing dream to produce an Indigenous festival was realised in 2013 when he collaborated with leading cultural creative Rhoda Roberts\, producing the inaugural Boomerang Festival: a ground-breaking Indigenous festival for all Australians held at the home of Bluesfest\, the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm\, to extensive acclaim. \nAs the Director of Byron Bay’s multi-award winning music festival\, Peter is passionate about social and environmental responsibility and is immeasurably philanthropic; continually supporting myriad charities and community groups\, and ensuring his events uphold their commitment to environmental conservation and animal welfare. This is reflected in the festival winning six International A Greener Festival Awards since 2007. \nBluesfest is respected for creating ongoing employment and contracts for individuals and small businesses in Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers; a small regional part of Australia with limited employment opportunities. DESCRIPTION:ADFAS Byron Bay and Districts: The Queen’s Private Diamond Collection\nPresenter: Adrian Dickens Monday 8 April A & I Hall Bangalow\n6pm for a 6.30pm start\nThe Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Societies Byron & Districts Branch (ADFAS Byron) extends a warm welcome to all those interested in the arts for this one hour lecture.\nCost: $25 non-members \nHaving viewed “The Queen’s Private Diamond Collection Exhibition\,” Adrian Dickens presents the history and craftsmanship of these diamonds from a jeweller’s point of view. In this one hour lecture\, Adrian explains how diamonds are reworked to reflect changes in fashion.  Hear stories behind Russian tiaras; necklaces from India and the great South African diamonds. Discover the political role of Queen Victoria’s diadem and appreciate how the Queen\, Camilla and Kate use diamonds to express political power. \nAdrian was born in the UK. He emigrated to Australia in 1988 and is now a fixture on the Australian jewellery scene. Previously\, he was manager of Paul Bram in Melbourne\, Jan Logan’s flagship store in Collins St Melbourne and more recently\, manager of BUNDA Fine Jewels in Sydney. In 2012\, he created Circa AD Jewels\, providing a unique personal jewellery service collecting and “re-inventing” selected items of fine jewellery and rare pieces\, into wearable 21st century designs\, reflecting the design values and quality of their era. \nLectures are held once a month on a Monday evening at the A & I Hall Bangalow.\nDoors open at 6pm with a welcome drink\, for a 6.30pm start. DESCRIPTION:Go Byron Hands On Day\, 16TH March\, Clarkes Beach\, Byron Bay.. LET’S GO SURFING!\nThis is our last gathering for the season folks! Volunteers are needed and asked to turn up and sign on for a fun filled morning at 9am. Participants can sign on at 10am ready to surf! Lunch for all provided.See you there!!! \nGo Byron is the official sponsor of the DSAA ‘Hands On Day’ happening in Byron Bay on Saturday March 16th 2019. This surfing event will be held at Clarke’s Beach and will be the finale event of the DSAA’s season. This is the day for all members of the community to give back to the disabled community who need a helping hand to enjoy what the rest of us take for granted – a safe and enjoyable day at the beach. \nWe would love to see you\, our loyal affiliate and your customers get involved in the event. Please coming along on the day and volunteer or simply cheer on the participants. DSAA aim to ‘put a smile on your dial’ whether you’re a volunteer\, a participant or a spectator. All volunteers are asked to arrive and register at 9am. There’s plenty to do to help out and plenty of fun to be shared so bring some mates along for a fun day in the sun. \nIf you or someone you know would like to participate in the Hands On Day\, registration for participants starts at 10am. This is a free event for all ages. Rash vests\, sunscreen\, water\, fruit and lunch are all supplied by DSAA. The Hands On Surfing Morning will be followed with a social lunch and presentation for the surfers.
