DESCRIPTION:Byron Bay Lighthouse Run is organised by Lisa Parkes\, with the assistance of the Lighthouse Run committee\, an amazing group of volunteers and sponsors. Now in its 13th year\, the run has grown from humble beginnings. \nThe organisers take no money from the event at all – all money raised goes to charity. Each year we select different charities. We consider that some charities get huge support so\, we try to go for the underdog and smaller ventures. We also like to keep in touch with projects to see where our money has gone. Our team of committee members\, volunteers and sponsors work hard to organise the event. The participants who run or walk pay for the event\, so we like to take notice of what happens to the money. \nIn 2019 we are supporting headspace Lismore and the Women’s Resource Service at the Mullumbimby and Districts Neighbourhood Centre.

Headlining is Aussie punk-rock royalty Frenzal Rhomb\, guitar hero protege Harts\, and The Delta Riggs who will have their much anticipated third album released in September . \nByron Bay Brewery will be turned into a guitarists heaven with performances and seminars by Torres Strait’s ‘Magic Fingers\,’ Chris Tamwoy\, industry legend Peter Northcote\, bluesman Claude Hay and Australian guitar icon Nathan Cavaleri who makes his return to the stage on the back of his Demons album tour. There is something for all music lovers from soul and funk band The Soul Movers\, international supergroup – The Sidemen\, as well as local favorites Marshall O’Kell & The Fro\, Minnie Marks and many more! Sunday will kick off with Bunny Racket for the little rockers and scheduled is a long list of family activities\, hosted by Murray Cook (The Soul Movers/The Wiggles) Produced by Byron Music \, the event features 25+ live performances on two stages\, as well as a Guitar Market showcasing some amazing instruments and craftsmanship from the world’s favourite manufacturers and Australia’s finest luthiers. \nThere will be workshops and seminars presented by artists and manufacturers on both days. Academy of Performing Arts has led to the exciting development of a theatre production of Nit Boy hitting the stage in Byron in October. \nTristan shares his thought on this production –  ‘In the time since I wrote Nit Boy nits have become no less popular. Kids still seem to love them\, so it’s pretty exciting to me to have my words on a page come to life in the form of giant nits on a stage. I’ve met the cast and I love Anouska’s creative vision and energy. I’m so happy to be collaborating with her again. I only wish this opportunity was open to me in my town when I was a keen kid actor.’ \nAnouska describes  – “Working alongside Tristan last year with ‘Two Wolves’ was such a buzz! His characters and action-packed style of story telling work really well for live performance\, so I was eager to adapt another. Nit Boy will be entirely different however\, as it’s a comedy and will be played by a cast of kids aged 7-16. When I was reading the novel Nit Boy\, I was immediately visualising a space and characters within in it. I could imagine the action\, and the humour was tangible. It was such a treat! And really as a mum of three children\, I have experienced my fair share of headlice. The book had me scratching and itching\, while laughing out loud. Bring your old friends or come along to make new ones\, in a true celebration of the Golden Years. \nWhat is a Tea Dance\, you may ask? \ntea dance (noun)\n1. an occasion consisting of afternoon tea with dancing\, originating in 19th-century society. \nA tea dance\, also called a thé dansant (French for “dancing tea”)\, was a dance held in the summer or autumn from 4 to 7pm In the English countryside\, a garden party sometimes preceded the dance. The usual refreshments in 1880 were tea and coffee\, ices\, champagne-cup and claret-cup\, fruit\, sandwiches\, cake\, and biscuits. The expected feature was a live orchestra or a small band playing light classical music\, even after the invention of the phonograph. The dances included waltzes\, tangos\, and the Charleston by the late 1920s. The dining room served as the tea room\, with the dining tables arranged at one end as a buffet. Floral decorations were modest. \nBefore the 1950s\, young people flocked to tea dances to socialise\, and dance the tango\, waltz and foxtrot. Then the 60s happened and for the next four decades we preferred to dance in nightclubs alone — or\, at most\, around our handbags. But recently\, something has changed. Perhaps it’s the basic premise that everything old becomes new again\, or a more basic longing to connect\, but the Tea Dance is back in vogue — and this time the crowds are much more diverse. \n“Over time the move towards people dancing alone meant we lost the art of making contact through dance\, and we want to bring back this connection. We are holding our first Picture House Tea Dance to encourage this communication through dance to be available to all. DESCRIPTION:The Lavazza Italian Film Festival was founded in 2000 by Antonio Zeccola who\, in one of Australia’s many migrant success stories\, built Australia’s only national boutique cinema network which now encompasses more than one hundred screens nationally. \nTwenty years ago\, Antonio realised that Australia had other film festivals\, but nothing dedicated to Italian cinema\, and an idea was born. In November 2000 in Sydney and Melbourne\, the first edition presented eleven features\, five retrospective titles and five shorts\, including Opening Night selection Bread and Tulips (Pane e Tulipani) by Silvio Soldini and One Hundred Steps (I cento passi) directed by Marco Tullio Giordana. Since then the festival has grown in popularity to the point where it is now the biggest public celebration of Italian cinema outside Italy. \nThe event has partnered with many organisations and cultural partners over the years\, however the most longstanding relationship has been with LAVAZZA who have now been the Festival’s principal sponsor for the last sixteen years. \nOrganised entirely by Palace\, a 100% Australian-owned independent family business\, the festival continues to present the best new contemporary Italian cinema and most cherished classics on the big screen. DESCRIPTION:Art Deco architecture from the 1920s and 30s has an immediately recognisable style and appeal. At that time\, precision machining produced perfect straight lines and curves that enhanced all aspects of these unique forward-looking designs for cinemas\, hotels\, theatres\, offices\, shops and homes. Features include streamlining\, sunbursts\, ziggurats\, eyebrows\, frozen fountains\, Egyptian themes & nautical designs. Between the wars\, this movement spread into the suburbs and the film industry used art deco design to attract cinema-goers into surreal surroundings of the picture palaces. Christopher Bradley’s talk on this unique architecture and art history will explore impressive examples in South Beach Miami\, Napier\, Cairo\, and Mumbai as well as art deco in Australia. \nDoors open for a welcome drink at 6pm. DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, American firefighters Eric Helmick and his two sons\, Hunter and Tuck – took on the challenge of swimming Australia’s longest river\, the River Murray\, a total distance of over 2400 km to inspire the youth of Australia. Their journey began in the Snowy Mountains and ended 120 days later in South Australia and the Southern Ocean. They called themselves Team Help. Their journey was not just a personal challenge. Though the team had experience as certified swift water rescue swimmers\, both Eric and Hunter were not endurance swimmers prior to the swim. They simply wanted to do something that would capture people’s attention and in so doing\, were able to find opportunities to meet with youth along their journey. The goal was simple. Do something epic to inspire people. Inspiration brings hope. Hope brings transformation. As the team met with youth and schools along their journey\, they were able to share their hearts and encourage others to believe in themselves.

SUMMARY:The 2019 Ocean Shores Art Expo
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Ocean Shores Art Expo is a three – day cultural event open from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th August\, 10 – 4pm at the Ocean Shores Public School hall. Awards Ceremony is 7pm Friday night. Details at www.osartexpo.com. A unique feature of the Art Expo\, is that artists create work based on a theme. The 2019 theme “Celebrating a Moment” was chosen as it is the jubilee year of the foundation of Ocean Shores. Prizes of $8400 include the special $1000 Jubilee prize to commemorate this community milestone & the $2000 Vale Award. The Awards ceremony on Friday night will feature a “mini” Vivid interactive light show and music by Dell & Raven. Sunday afternoon from 1.30 – 3pm features performances by the Dangerously Poetic Press\, Mana Aloha Hula Dance Troupe and local choirs. This is now regular artistic event at the Expo\, broadening its cultural appeal. \nSome history –  The Ocean Shores Art Expo began life in 2004\, a collaborative project between a group of local artists and the Mullumbimby/Brunswick heads Lions Club. Two major aims of this group were to build a sense of community in Ocean Shores and to celebrate and encourage the work of local artists. The first exhibition held in the Ocean Shores Community centre had 40 paintings capturing the Brunswick River Bridge prior to its demolition. An important feature of this Art Expo was the inclusion of artworks by students in the Brunswick Valley Schools. Fast forward to 2018 and the 15th Art Expo\, now a three day event held annually in the last weekend in August\, from 10am to 4pm Friday to Sunday in the Ocean Shores Public School hall. It displayed 300 adult entries and 320 student works from 14 Byron Shire schools on the theme “Treasures.” Awards night attracted over 350 people and across the weekend over 1000 people viewed the exhibition. Catering was again by the Mullumbimby High School Hospitality teachers and students. On Saturday\, the Ocean Shores Public School holds its “Festival of the Imagination” drawing a substantial crowd\, a joint event with mutual benefits for both organisations. \nIn recent years\, when financially able\, the committee has donated funds to local community organisations. These included funds to support school art programs\, to organisations supporting young people\, the homeless\, art programs for people with disabilities and Yallakool landcare group. This year’s funding supported a workshop for talented High School art students. The Ocean Shores Art Expo is now firmly established as a major cultural event in the north of the Byron Shire. In 2018 it was supported by 54 local businesses & wonderful support from 100 community volunteers. The small\, very dedicated team of who comprise the Art Expo Committee would welcome new members who wish to be part of this terrific community event.
