SUMMARY:The Life & Death of Westerly Windina
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Byron Bay Film Festival why not enjoy an evening in Brunswick Heads by visiting the Brunswick Picture House to see the astonishing film about a surfing titan who became Westerly Windina. \nIn 2008\, years after nearly drowning in a traumatic and life-changing surfing accident\, surfing champion Peter Drouyn suddenly resurfaced by coming out as a trans woman on national television. Her new name\, she said\, was Westerly Windina. “It was a supernova\,” Westerly said of her gender awakening. “It just kicked in one night\, and suddenly Peter went; Westerly was there.” \nThe surf community\, and Australia at large\, were astonished. Though she’d once been a top-tier athlete with sponsorships and a burgeoning acting career\, Westerly was now living in public housing on Australia’s Gold Coast — alone\, poor\, and often taunted by her neighbours. \nThe Life and Death of Westerly Windina explores Westerly’s upbringing\, her years as a surfing titan\, and follows her into a new chapter as she searches for acceptance from friends\, family\, a still-hyper masculine sport\, and most importantly — from herself. \n  \nFilmmakers will be in attendance at this screening. The evening also includes short films.\nBrunswick Picture House has a kiosk that is open for food and drink one hour before showtime.\nAge restrictions: The film is unclassified and is recommended for 15+\nDoors open: 6:10pm \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Russell Hobbs British Film Festival | Palace Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The superb Russell Hobbs British Film Festival opens on Wednesday 6 November and concludes on Sunday 8 December. With a line-up of films fresh from international film festivals\, and showcasing the best of British talent\, both behind and in front of the camera\, this year’s slate includes a celebrated collection of tender dramas\, action packed thrillers\, comedies\, documentaries\, and classic retrospectives. \nThe Festival is excited to present the romance Four Letters of Love\, featuring a commanding ensemble cast including Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter. Polly Steele’s beautiful story follows Nicholas and Isabel who are destined for each other. As ghosts\, fate and the sheer power of true love pull them together\, so too does life threaten to tear them apart. \nAylin Tezel’s directorial debut Falling Into Place is screening in its Australian Premiere as part of the Festival. This tender drama follows Kira (played by Tezel) and Ian\, each fleeing their own personal struggles\, who cross paths during a winter weekend on the Isle of Skye. Their connection is profound but when they return to London\, they must both confront their past. \nScreening during the festival\, is Widow Clicquot. The British/French co-production based on a true story offers an effervescent portrait of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin\, the “Grande Dame of Champagne\,” otherwise known as Veuve Clicquot. \nClosing this year’s Festival is the exclusive Australian Premiere of the highly anticipated We Live In Time. Featuring beautifully nuanced performances from Oscar nominees Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield\, this heart rendering romance delves into the profound question of how to make the most of the time we have in this world. \nThe Byron Visitors Centre has 2 x double passes to give away this year. Drop in and ask us about the Film Festival. \nFor more information and tickets.

SUMMARY:Cheeky Cabaret Christmas | Brunswick Picture House
DESCRIPTION:A very Cheeky Christmas will be in the Shire this year!\n’Tis the season to be CHEEKY! And Brunswick Picture House has got your Christmas party all sorted! What better way to celebrate this silliest of all seasons by throwing your Christmas do  at the biggest party in town? \nThe reputation of this outrageous genre-bending show has spread like wildfire throughout our region with its often weird and always fabulous line-up — a new cast each season. This is without question the wildest night you’ll have in the Northern Rivers! \nBack for two weeks along with special weekend matinee sessions! Performance start times and costs can be found on the Brunswick Picture House website. \nTickets \nAbout The Cheeky…. \nBrunswick Heads had no idea what to expect when the Brunswick Picture House opened its doors in Easter 2016 with its adult variety show\, the Cheeky Cabaret. It has redefined a night out at the theatre\, smashing together circus\, vaudeville\, comedy\, new burlesque and everything in between. It’s since established its reputation here in the Shire\, selling out every season and attracting international artists who would ordinarily play much bigger stages. \nThe Cheeky features a different cast of troubadours\, miscreants\, delectable divas and cabaret queens every season\, so no two shows are ever the same! You’ll leave spellbound\, titillated and amazed.  Think you’ve seen it all?! Think again… \nImportant note:\nThe Cheeky may contain some brief or full nudity\, raucous adult language and highly suggestive or sexual humour. The acts are never gratuitous or in vain; they are intended to titillate\, to make your jaws drop\, and always to entertain\, with tongue firmly planted in cheek. A variety show like the Cheeky means that there is something for everyone\, and conversely\, some acts may not be to your liking. You may wish to cover your eyes or your ears\, but never ever don’t at least give the Cheeky a try! As always\, bring Grandma but leave the little ones at home. \nThe kiosk is open for food and drink one hour before showtime. For the bar menu and what’s on offer\, check out the Picture House Dine & Drink page. \nPlease note age restrictions 12+ \nDuration: Approximately 90–100 minutes with 20-minute intermission. Doors will open 20 mins before showtime.

SUMMARY:The Road To Patagonia | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Road to Patagonia is a stunning\, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people\, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. \nWe follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure\, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike\, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia. But deep in the wilderness-alone with the wolves and the bears the journeyer’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything\, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams\, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south\, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels\, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer\, leaving them with existential questions. \nThe 50\,000km surfing odyssey becomes beautifully complicated by their decision to downshift from motorcycles to horseback\, presenting a relational approach to the breathtaking landscapes and a host of challenges that ultimately become extremely rewarding. Hannon and Hillier succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments during the world-first expedition\, and the noticeable lack of camera-crew becomes The Road to Patagonia’s strength. The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film\, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years\, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world\, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature. \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:The Necks | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Seeing The Necks in concert is an experience like no other. Chris Abrahams (piano)\, Lloyd Swanton (bass)\, and Tony Buck (drums/percussion) take to the stage with no prior preparation. They embark on an exploration of a simple musical idea\, gradually evolving their pieces—which can extend for an hour or more—conjuring textures and aural illusions that defy easy description. No two Necks concerts are ever the same. \nThe Necks latest album ‘Bleed’ (released 11 Oct) explores a sublime language of stillness. With a single\, 42-minute composition\, The Necks masterfully express the unspeakable beauty of decay and space in yet another totally distinct entry in a vast and stunning body of work. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Aquarius - a screening | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Aquarius is a documentary about dreamers\, tree-huggers and radical ratbags and the social and cultural exploration that changed a generation and implemented environmental change for the Northern Rivers. \nJoin us at Byron Theatre  for a special screening and Q & A for the film Aquarius .  There will be an introduction from the filmmakers and a post screening Q&A featuring members of the filmmaking team as well as original Aquarians live in person. \nIn May 1973\, when thousands of young people travelled the back roads of Northern NSW to camp and explore a new way of living at Nimbin Aquarius Festival\, something unexpected happened amongst all the bliss\, drugs and drama. An unprecedented 10\,000 artists\, activists\, hippies\, radical students\, gurus and visionaries arrived to a small diary farm for this 10 day gathering\, a gathering that birthed an irrepressible movement that may have been the much-needed blueprint for sustainable change. \nThrough extensive collaboration and hours of precious newly-uncovered footage\, the film directs our gaze to the Festival – its inception and its aftermath – and examines the power of that one event to continue to shape history. Aquarius is about the constant struggle between the establishment and the alternative\, between community and the individual. \nRecommended 15+ \nTICKETS \nTRAILER \nEvent Details \n6:00 pm – Venue doors and Bar open\n6:40 pm – Theatre doors open\n7:00 pm – Event begins\n9:30 pm – Event ends \n
