Or not… “I actually think this is the start of me really having fun with music.” \nIf anyone deserves to break the shackles and enjoy the moment\, it’s multi-platinum-selling musician Matt Corby. For a decade\, Corby has been pushing his own boundaries\, embracing a journey of self-discovery that’s seen him wrestle a few pre-conceptions and stare down his share of demons. Now\, with two ARIA Song of the Year awards on the shelf\, and a #1 debut album\, Telluric\, behind him\, Corby can genuinely lay claim to some hard-earned perspective. \nCorby’s new album\, Rainbow Valley\, was written and recorded in a period that also saw the birth of his first child. His second full-length release is brimming with a new-found vitality and joy\, a fresh energy that finds perfect expression in a kaleidoscopic reimagining of the sound he has honed for the last ten years. From the surreal\, dreamlike splendour of first single No Ordinary Life — which was met with worldwide acclaim and high-rotation on triple j – to the soulful majesty of the title track\, Rainbow Valley reveals an artist who seems both more aware of what he wants and why he wants it. “When I found out I was going to be a father\, it helped me get my head together\,” Corby says. “And as part of that\, I was able to set aside a lot of weird hang ups I used to have\, personally and selfishly\, about making music. So\, when it came to writing\, I found I could be less stubborn\, more open minded to going in new musical directions.” \nBuoyed by a boatload of inspiration from those creative sessions\, earlier this year Corby retired to the idyllic surroundings of Byron Bay’s Music Farm studios to begin work on the album proper. As he had with Telluric\, Corby once again enlisted the help of producer Dann Hume (Amy Shark\, Client Liason) and engineer Matthew Neighbour (Avalanches\, Missy Higgins). Everything else\, he took care of himself. “I play and sing every part on the album\, again\,” he says. “Working like that meant we could really develop ideas quickly — when I want it to feel a certain way\, I know five things I can do on six instruments that could potentially create that\, and so we just go through them all.” \nRecorded in the idyllic surroundings of Byron Bay’s Music Farm studios\, the results speak for themselves. Across two weekends\, artists of all genres will open their studios to the public\, allowing you to see into the private working life of the professional artist. \nYou will meet the artists and learn what is involved in their creative and production process. Where feasible\, artists will offer the public the opportunity to try their hand at a specific process – please note this may not be possible due to Covid-restrictions. \nOS-BBB was initiated in 2018 by Paul Button who strongly believes that creativity is essential for a healthy community. Paul wanted to give the public the opportunity to see that anyone can ‘do’ art – you just have to find your preferred medium\, and begin! He also wanted to give people the opportunity to have the question ‘how do you do that’ (which is always asked in gallery exhibitions) answered – by witnessing the process of creation at its source\, in the artist’s studio. \nAssisted by an energetic committee of Maria & John Heaton\, Deb McFarlane and Ange Parr\, OS-BBB was born and its first two years were a great success. DESCRIPTION:Select Music presents Thelma Plum with special guest Molly Millington.\nThelma Plum is a 24-year-old Gamilaraay woman\, musician and creator. She grew up in Brisbane and spent many of her childhood years on her Grandparents’ farm in Delungra\, a small country town in rural New South Wales. She has been making music for her whole life\, but hasn’t always been ready to share her story\, until now. \nThelma Plum’s debut album Better In Blak is a story about culture\, heritage\, love\, and pain. With incredible strength\, courage and heartbreaking tenderness\, her debut album captures so deftly what it’s like to be a young Aboriginal woman in Australia. Since releasing her 2014 EP Monsters\, Thelma has been through a lot. “On this album I speak about how it feels being an Aboriginal woman in this country. When I was younger I wasn’t ready to share this side of me\, but I’ve grown a lot in the past few years and that’s changed\,” says Thelma. \nThelma started working on her debut album four years ago. In fact\, she had an album of songs ready to go\, but she scrapped it entirely and decided to start again. “I’d written all these songs\, but they didn’t represent what I’d been through. So\, I rewrote the whole thing\,” explains Thelma. “The new songs just came to me\, because I’d reached a point in my life where I was very ready to write them”. \nListening to Better In Blak\, you can tell that this is true. Written and recorded across New York\, London and Sydney with her frequent collaborator\, producer Alex Burnett (Antony & Cleopatra\, Sparkadia)\, the album is 12 tracks of Thelma at her best; brutally honest\, insightful\, incisive and with her heart on her sleeve. DESCRIPTION:This wonderful Classical Music Concert features: \nMargaret Curtis (piano & harp) \nOriginally from Sydney\, Margaret began her musical studies on piano at the early age of 4. She achieved her Associate diploma at the age of 16 and continued her studies until\, at the age of 26 she achieved her Performance Fellowship with the Trinity College of Music\, London. In 2000 she commenced studies on the harp with Louise Johnson\, formerly Principal Harpist\, Sydney Symphony Orchestra. \nMargaret is well known and regarded as an accomplished performer and accompanist on the harp and piano.  She has performed with various orchestras and is a member of the Lismore Symphony and Gold Coast Chamber orchestras.  She is also the Musical Director for the Bangalow Theatre company.  Margaret also performs in solo recitals\, accompanying choirs and solo instrumentalists. Margaret is based in Bangalow where she is a freelance harpist and pianist\, accompanist on both instruments and a private music teacher. \n  \nBodhi Scott-Jones (trumpet) \nBodhi Scott-Jones is a Brisbane-based freelance trumpet performer and educator specialising in solo\, orchestral\, chamber and jazz music. \nSince relocating to Queensland from his hometown of Ballina\, Bodhi has attained his Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University under former Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet\, Sarah Butler. The highlight of Bodhi’s degree was performing as Principal Trumpet for Mahler Symphony No. 8 under the baton of prolific German conductor Johannes Fritzsch. Bodhi kickstarted his solo career with the Lismore Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16 performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. As well as being a soloist\, he is currently the Principal Cornet player with Brisbane Brass\, and he can be seen in regular performances as a casual musician with the Queensland Festival Philharmonic\, Queensland Pops Orchestra and Queensland Symphony Orchestra. \nBodhi’s music has taken him all around Australia with groups including the NSW State Wind Band\, Brisbane Brass and the Australian Youth Orchestra. His career has also taken him abroad to the USA and China\, with his first international appearance at the Beijing International Wind Music Carnival in 2016. \n  \nFrancis Atkins (piano) \nFrancis Atkins is a young\, aspiring Australian pianist. Guided by international-prize-winning pianist\, Natasha Vlassenko\, he has flourished into a fiery and passionate performer. He has performed in multiple musical hotspots around Australia\, including the Sydney Opera House\, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre\, the Southbank ABC centre\, the Bangalow Music Festival\, and the Queensland Conservatorium. \nFrancis finds himself equally at home as concerto soloist\, recitalist\, and chamber musician. Recent collaborations include performances alongside the Southern Cross Soloists\, soprano Katie Stenzel\, and in 2019\, he gave his debut performance as concerto soloist with the Ipswich City Symphony. \nJust this year\, Francis was selected as a Brisbane Music Festival young artist\, and as a “Next Generation Artist” with the Southern Cross Soloists. He was also recently selected to perform with the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra\, as part of a concerto festival\, taking place in December this year. \nIn his spare time\, Francis enjoys learning the music of Rachmaninoff and Debussy\, cooking\, and exploring different flavours of tea. \n  \nThis concert is presented by Great Southern Nights in association with Byron Theatre \nGreat Southern Nights is a new event to kick-start the recovery of the live music industry – featuring 1\,000 COVID-safe gigs across Sydney and Regional NSW\, throughout November 2020 (Australian Music Month). These include pioneering big wave surfer Kai Lenny riding the futuristic foil surfboard in gigantic surf at Jaws\, and fellow big wave rider Rodrigo Koxa breaking the world record for the biggest wave ever ridden. \n“To see these big wave gladiators charging down monster waves is just the most exciting thing\,” said Tim\, who is not only the films’ main cinematographer\, but also the founder of the event. \nThe first film features big wave surfers at Nazaré in Portugal\, the second\, at Mullaghmore in Ireland; the third\, at Teahupo’o in Tahiti; the fourth\, at The Right in Western Australia; the fifth\, at Cloudbreak in Fiji. SUMMARY:TAKEOVER 2020 presented by Bangalow Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:This September Bangalow Theatre Company will be presenting an immersive\, interactive and creative performance experience for the Byron Region. TakeOver will be a showcase of original performance and dance works that will be staged in multiple spaces around Bangalow. Audiences groups of 12 will be guided from one experience to another\, viewing short\, sharp and brilliant 12 minute pieces all taking place in our streets. \nImagine watching a 12 minute Contemporary Dance Performance in the Laundromat\, then walking to the railway tracks where a cast of actors perform a compelling scene\, then walking to a cafe on main street where a short drama takes place\, and then arriving at the Deck of restaurant for an intimate musical soundscape performance. In response to the current Covid19 pandemic and isolation that has taken place in all communities\, we have reached out to our Bangalow community to hear their personal stories of surviving the last three months in lockdown. Some stories were heart-breaking\, some were funny\, some were of loneliness and many were of change and hope! \nBTC has taken their skill set of creating powerful and moving theatre work\, and have written 5 originals shows in response to our communities stories. Audiences will be taken on a Journey\, not only through the through the streets of Bangalow to encounter progressive\, poignant\, profound and comical performance works.. but also on a journey of the narrative that Covid19 has weaved throughout our community. DESCRIPTION:Fresh off releasing their new belter\, “Under The Thunder” and accompanying video\, Skegss are proud to present a series of once in a lifetime shows from the iconic Brunswick Picture House\, NSW. \nThe ‘Under The Thunder Black Tie World Tour’ will take place over 4 nights between July 8th– 11th. \nThe shows will see the band perform for a limited capacity audience (seated and asked to arrive in formal attire)\, with the Friday and Saturday nights also live-streamed to international audiences via Veeps. \nIn some of the first concerts to be attended by live audiences post-COVID lockdown laws\, fans at the shows can expect a full night of entertainment that may not happen at a Skegss show ever again — including a magician\, cheese platters and limited edition merch. \nJust like the Logies or Golden Globes\, fans will be seated at theatre style round tables so make sure to polish your shoes\, wear a tie and dress to impress! DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim Classic will be held on Sunday 3rd May 2020. This is our 33rd Classic and our 13th Mini Swim.\nThe Programme for Race Day\, Sunday\, 3rd May 2020\n7:00am – Check-in and issue of timing bracelet\, swim cap\, event T-shirt or baseball cap at the Surf Club\, Byron Bay on Sunday May 3rd from 7am.\n8:00am – The Byron Bay Mitre 10 Mini Swim check-in must be completed in time for a briefing and to allow entrants to walk to Clarks Beach for their race start.\n8:45am – The Byron Bay Mitre 10 Mini Swim staggered start at The Pass area. The actual Start area is dependent on the conditions of the day.\n9:00am – The Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim Classic check-in closes.\n9:00am – Race briefing for the Classic takes place at the tents outside the Surf Club.\n9:15am to 10:00am – Buses leave the Surf Club for the start line at Wategos Beach. A secure baggage storage area is provided round to the right on the road side of the Hall.\n10:00am – Staggered starts for the Classic commences.\nThose who wish to wear clothing to the start for weather protection are reminded there are no facilities for these to be returned to the Surf Club. There will\, however\, be a clothing bin available for those that wish to donate clothing items to local church groups.\n12:30pm – The Presentation is scheduled to start with lucky draws for entrants\, raffle draws\, as well as the Swim Presentations.
