What the trees are and what they do for us.  What the ocean holds and what it does for us. If we understand more about how much we need a thriving environment around us\, then I believe that people will join me in giving back\, restoring\, and caretaking. Hey\, and it is fun!! I will also talk about the history of Byron Bay including highlights about the lighthouse.   In addition\, you will get some invite to my local clean-ups and maybe join me on a snorkel to the local reef.” \nBy way of an introduction for the people new to the Shire or who do not know me. I am 14 years old\, born in Byron Bay\, have been making films with my mum\, a professional filmmaker to educate people about the problems of and solutions to plastic pollution. It all started on my 11th birthday on the main beach as I witnessed the release of 3 rehabilitated sea turtles back into the ocean. I found out about plastic kills millions of marine animals and with the help of my mum Karin\, we embarked on a journey to help save the ocean from plastic pollution. For the past 4 years\, I have been showing my film ‘Plastic Alarm’ to over 800 000 students in schools all over Australia. I have spoken at different events such as the 2019 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayor’s Forum. I became Clean Up Australia Day Youth Ambassador as well as the World Clean Up Day Ambassador and was nominated for the Department of Environment Green Globe Award and a Department of Education Student Award. Last year my mum and I started a new film called ‘Plan B’ which offers solutions for how to save the Coral Reefs including the Great Barrier Reef. \n\n\nCheck out the available dates and book here!

The series offers a unique platform for artists to perform in an outdoor arena in front of a live intimate crowd\, off the back of a grueling year absent of regular music festivals. \nSummerStage ignites fresh energy into the ever-popular Byron Bay festival scene with headline acts\, local artist and local producers and distillers coming together in a natural outdoor environment. Creator Lisa Hunt said “we have created a unique\, glamorous music series\, with intimate spaces and picnic circles to cater for all ages and music lovers of any genre-after a year on pause it’s time to get the bands back together”. \nHunt’s first foray into event management came from a necessity to perform again – facing the harsh reality of a declining live music industry\, she began to dream of getting a boutique festival up and running. Photo supplied. \n\nHilary Bain\nEver since March of this year\, with the COVID-19 pandemic response of lockdowns and the fear it has elicited\, there’s been a run on seeds at seed companies. \nIt seems everyone went mad around toilet paper\, dogs\, and seeds! \nIt’s a new take on Leonard Cohen’s amazing lyrics: \nEverybody knows that the boat is leaking\, \neverybody knows that the captain lied. \nEverybody’s got this broken feeling\, \nlike their father or their dog just died. \nWe in the West are just two generations from living on the land\, so some deep\, primal knowing and recognition must have been at play\, that seeds are one of the most important ways we can help ourselves survive in an uncertain future. And gardens have sprung up everywhere\, one of the upsides to this latest calamity. \nDogs were snatched up for companionship and comfort. Toilet paper too – I think the media had something to do with that. \nOne of the downsides\, besides the growing death rate of\, mostly\, people over the age of eighty\, and loneliness and isolation for the others\, is the relentless and continuing centralisation of practically everything\, and we’re all being pushed into the internet portal\, one of the tools of surveillance\, where once again the biggest corporations make trillions stealing business from all the small businesses around the world\, forced to shut down owing to the pandemic. \nOnce again prophetic words from Leonard Cohen: \nEverybody knows the dice are loaded\, \nEverybody rolls with their fingers crossed. \nEverybody knows the war is over\, \nEverybody knows that the good guys lost. \nEverybody knows the fight was fixed\, \nthe poor stay poor and the rich get rich. \nThat’s how it goes… everybody knows. \nAfter WWII\, there was an agenda to get people off the land and into cities\, and a relentless takeover of land and resources by giant corporations\, aided and abetted by the governments in the West\, which made these agribusiness corporations even bigger and more powerful. \nNow\, what’s being stolen from the people are all the seeds; through the science of genetic engineering. Corporations claim they are improving crops – engineering them to yield more\, to be more drought tolerant\, pesticide and herbicide resistant etc. This\, so corporations like Bayer-Monsanto et al can patent the seeds so they become their property\, and farmers can no longer save seed but have to buy it\, year after year. \nFreedom to save seeds\nWhat’s really happening is theft of the human commons by giant agri-chemical corporations\, who now own seventy-five per cent of all seed companies worldwide. \nAnd as Vandana Shiva says\, ‘If farmers don’t have the freedom to save their own seeds\, how will the rest of us have that freedom?’ \nBy putting seeds in the soil\, with water and some nutrient in a certain climate\, the growing plant will automatically\, naturally adapt and\, generation by generation become drought tolerant all by itself. Organic\, heirloom seeds are the best seeds to use\, to produce strong\, resilient plants. This is what humans have done for the past ten thousand years\, and an enormous quantity and diversity of seeds have been cultivated and passed down through the generations in every country. This is part of the power of de-centralisation\, otherwise known as localisation. This gives us all the freedom to grow our own food\, and have real food security and practise sustainability. This is one of the most basic freedoms we have\, and multinational agribusinesses are trying to take it from us. \nByron Hinterland Seed Savers (BHSS) and Byron Seed Share are planning to have a seed saving event at the Mullum Farmers Market on Friday 11 December\, 8–10.30am. \nByron Seed Share is a website offering at least forty perennial food plants\, that local people have cultivated and are willing to share with those who sign up to be members. \nPaul Crebar will be in attendance and will talk about the benefits of being a member of Byron Seed Share. \nRasa Dover\, founder of BSS\, will be on hand to help people identify seeds\, and will be sharing the seeds she has. \nI will also be there to share knowledge of how to save seeds with anyone who wants to know. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the songs of The Beatles.\nIn January 1969 a humble rooftop in London played host to the band of the century.   It all started in 1957 when Paul McCartney met a fellow Liverpudlian musician called John Lennon.  Between their first meeting and last performance together on ‘that’ rooftop in 1969\, the songwriting duo single-handedly took over the world and changed the face of popular music. \nLast year Smokey Fields performed to a sell-out crowd at the Picture House with his Woodstock Reimagined show. We are excited to welcome him back\, joined by local musician Josh Jaws (who blew us away with his Woodstock Reimagined performance) to celebrate the songwriting of Lennon and McCartney… embarking on a journey from the rooftop in 1969 to 1957 and back. \n“We’re going to start the night where it all ended for fans on the rooftop in 1969 and take the audience back in time one song at a time to the beginning.”  — Smokey Fields \nSmokey Fields has been a fan of The Beatles since his early 20’s after being given a mix tape of their hits from 1965\, and so began his my own Beatles revolution. \n“During lockdown this year\, I started listening to full albums of the Beatles. You will meet the artists and learn what is involved in their creative and production process. Where feasible\, artists will offer the public the opportunity to try their hand at a specific process – please note this may not be possible due to Covid-restrictions.\n\n OS-BBB was initiated in 2018 by Paul Button who strongly believes that creativity is essential for a healthy community. Paul wanted to give the public the opportunity to see that anyone can ‘do’ art – you just have to find your preferred medium\, and begin! He also wanted to give people the opportunity to have the question ‘how do you do that’ (which is always asked in gallery exhibitions) answered – by witnessing the process of creation at its source\, in the artist’s studio. Assisted by an energetic committee of Maria & John Heaton\, Deb McFarlane and Ange Parr\, OS-BBB was born and its first two years were a great success. Across two weekends\, artists of all genres will open their studios to the public\, allowing you to see into the private working life of the professional artist. \nYou will meet the artists and learn what is involved in their creative and production process. Where feasible\, artists will offer the public the opportunity to try their hand at a specific process – please note this may not be possible due to Covid-restrictions. \nOS-BBB was initiated in 2018 by Paul Button who strongly believes that creativity is essential for a healthy community. Paul wanted to give the public the opportunity to see that anyone can ‘do’ art – you just have to find your preferred medium\, and begin! He also wanted to give people the opportunity to have the question ‘how do you do that’ (which is always asked in gallery exhibitions) answered – by witnessing the process of creation at its source\, in the artist’s studio. \nAssisted by an energetic committee of Maria & John Heaton\, Deb McFarlane and Ange Parr\, OS-BBB was born and its first two years were a great success. DESCRIPTION:Select Music presents Thelma Plum with special guest Molly Millington.\nThelma Plum is a 24-year-old Gamilaraay woman\, musician and creator. She grew up in Brisbane and spent many of her childhood years on her Grandparents’ farm in Delungra\, a small country town in rural New South Wales. She has been making music for her whole life\, but hasn’t always been ready to share her story\, until now. \nThelma Plum’s debut album Better In Blak is a story about culture\, heritage\, love\, and pain. With incredible strength\, courage and heartbreaking tenderness\, her debut album captures so deftly what it’s like to be a young Aboriginal woman in Australia. Since releasing her 2014 EP Monsters\, Thelma has been through a lot. “On this album I speak about how it feels being an Aboriginal woman in this country. When I was younger I wasn’t ready to share this side of me\, but I’ve grown a lot in the past few years and that’s changed\,” says Thelma. \nThelma started working on her debut album four years ago. In fact\, she had an album of songs ready to go\, but she scrapped it entirely and decided to start again. “I’d written all these songs\, but they didn’t represent what I’d been through. So\, I rewrote the whole thing\,” explains Thelma. “The new songs just came to me\, because I’d reached a point in my life where I was very ready to write them”. \nListening to Better In Blak\, you can tell that this is true. Written and recorded across New York\, London and Sydney with her frequent collaborator\, producer Alex Burnett (Antony & Cleopatra\, Sparkadia)\, the album is 12 tracks of Thelma at her best; brutally honest\, insightful\, incisive and with her heart on her sleeve. DESCRIPTION:This wonderful Classical Music Concert features: \nMargaret Curtis (piano & harp) \nOriginally from Sydney\, Margaret began her musical studies on piano at the early age of 4. She achieved her Associate diploma at the age of 16 and continued her studies until\, at the age of 26 she achieved her Performance Fellowship with the Trinity College of Music\, London. In 2000 she commenced studies on the harp with Louise Johnson\, formerly Principal Harpist\, Sydney Symphony Orchestra. \nMargaret is well known and regarded as an accomplished performer and accompanist on the harp and piano.  She has performed with various orchestras and is a member of the Lismore Symphony and Gold Coast Chamber orchestras.  She is also the Musical Director for the Bangalow Theatre company.  Margaret also performs in solo recitals\, accompanying choirs and solo instrumentalists. Margaret is based in Bangalow where she is a freelance harpist and pianist\, accompanist on both instruments and a private music teacher. \n  \nBodhi Scott-Jones (trumpet) \nBodhi Scott-Jones is a Brisbane-based freelance trumpet performer and educator specialising in solo\, orchestral\, chamber and jazz music. \nSince relocating to Queensland from his hometown of Ballina\, Bodhi has attained his Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University under former Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet\, Sarah Butler. The highlight of Bodhi’s degree was performing as Principal Trumpet for Mahler Symphony No. 8 under the baton of prolific German conductor Johannes Fritzsch. Bodhi kickstarted his solo career with the Lismore Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16 performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. As well as being a soloist\, he is currently the Principal Cornet player with Brisbane Brass\, and he can be seen in regular performances as a casual musician with the Queensland Festival Philharmonic\, Queensland Pops Orchestra and Queensland Symphony Orchestra. \nBodhi’s music has taken him all around Australia with groups including the NSW State Wind Band\, Brisbane Brass and the Australian Youth Orchestra. His career has also taken him abroad to the USA and China\, with his first international appearance at the Beijing International Wind Music Carnival in 2016. \n  \nFrancis Atkins (piano) \nFrancis Atkins is a young\, aspiring Australian pianist. Guided by international-prize-winning pianist\, Natasha Vlassenko\, he has flourished into a fiery and passionate performer. He has performed in multiple musical hotspots around Australia\, including the Sydney Opera House\, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre\, the Southbank ABC centre\, the Bangalow Music Festival\, and the Queensland Conservatorium. \nFrancis finds himself equally at home as concerto soloist\, recitalist\, and chamber musician. Recent collaborations include performances alongside the Southern Cross Soloists\, soprano Katie Stenzel\, and in 2019\, he gave his debut performance as concerto soloist with the Ipswich City Symphony. \nJust this year\, Francis was selected as a Brisbane Music Festival young artist\, and as a “Next Generation Artist” with the Southern Cross Soloists. He was also recently selected to perform with the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra\, as part of a concerto festival\, taking place in December this year. \nIn his spare time\, Francis enjoys learning the music of Rachmaninoff and Debussy\, cooking\, and exploring different flavours of tea. \n  \nThis concert is presented by Great Southern Nights in association with Byron Theatre \nGreat Southern Nights is a new event to kick-start the recovery of the live music industry – featuring 1\,000 COVID-safe gigs across Sydney and Regional NSW\, throughout November 2020 (Australian Music Month).
