DESCRIPTION:Between 1890 and 1891\, Monet painted his Haystacks series exploring the nuances of light\, shade\, tone and colour across the seasons and at different times of the day. Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday] 1890 is a glorious work from this series\, filled with dazzling light and luminous colour. \nPurchased in 1979 by the National Gallery of Australia\, Canberra\,  Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday]\, is one of five works shared with the Tweed Regional Gallery as part of the National Gallery of Australia’s Sharing the National Collection initiative. The Sharing the National Collection initiative sees major works of art from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection exhibited across regional and suburban communities. \nThe Monet is available to view at the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah for the duration of 2024. \nJoining the Monet from Saturday 2 March 2024 are three works by iconic Australian artist Margaret Olley\, along with a painting by one of Olley’s favourite artists\, Giorgio Morandi. DESCRIPTION:The Byron Theatre is celebrating with one of Australia’s hottest Cuban bands this February when they celebrate one of the landmark music documentaries of all time. Directed by Wim Wenders\, Buena Vista Social Club documents a group of legendary Cuban musicians\, some as old as their nineties\, being brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder to record a CD that captured the flavour of a musical style all but forgotten in the west following Castro’s takeover of Cuba \nThe resulting film and album became classics and in 2003 the album was ranked number 260 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time\, one of only two albums on the list to be produced in a non-English speaking country. In 2022\, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry. \nThis special event features a screening of the film on the big screen at Byron Theatre\, followed by a special live performance by Caribé. \nCaribé is a melding of musicians and dancers from Sydney’s Cuban\, jazz and Latin communities. Like the recipe for gherkin liqueur\, the magic of their music lies in the heart of all of us\, but never one man alone. Your heart will soar. You will smile and cry. For sure. In respect to our approach to providing the soundtrack\, we will be singing a repertoire in most part from the Soviet period the film was set\, with roughly equal balance of Russian and Ukrainian traditional songs. If we had more time we would sing exclusively from the period. Our intention and why we chose these songs has to do with our belief that often it is from periods of the greatest challenges that the most significant and powerful of art is created. Taking direction from Dostoevsky\, we celebrate the human experience and the art that was influenced during these times of great human hardship and despair. The music we have chosen comes from a place of respect. DESCRIPTION:Local Byron Bay surfer\, Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart felt it was time to bring a world championship event to Australia to showcase the skills of the world’s best surfers with a disability and in March 2024 this will be a reality. \nByron Bay will host the first international adaptive surfing event\, the 2024 Australian Pro\, from March 17 to March 22.  \nEach day the best surf between Main Beach and the Pass will be chosen for the days contest so get ready to walk Lawson Street to access the daily surf breaks. The comp features over 100 competitors from nine separate divisions to cater for most physical disabilities\, including amputation\, neurological impairment\, paralysation and visual impairment. \nThe event is an historic moment for the sport and will inspire and raise awareness about adaptive surfing among a wider community\, showcasing the talents of athletes competing at the top level.
