SUMMARY:The Road To Patagonia | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Road to Patagonia is a stunning\, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people\, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. \nWe follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure\, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike\, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia. But deep in the wilderness-alone with the wolves and the bears the journeyer’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything\, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams\, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south\, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels\, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer\, leaving them with existential questions. \nThe 50\,000km surfing odyssey becomes beautifully complicated by their decision to downshift from motorcycles to horseback\, presenting a relational approach to the breathtaking landscapes and a host of challenges that ultimately become extremely rewarding. Hannon and Hillier succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments during the world-first expedition\, and the noticeable lack of camera-crew becomes The Road to Patagonia’s strength. The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film\, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years\, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world\, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature. \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:The Necks | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Seeing The Necks in concert is an experience like no other. Chris Abrahams (piano)\, Lloyd Swanton (bass)\, and Tony Buck (drums/percussion) take to the stage with no prior preparation. They embark on an exploration of a simple musical idea\, gradually evolving their pieces—which can extend for an hour or more—conjuring textures and aural illusions that defy easy description. No two Necks concerts are ever the same. \nThe Necks latest album ‘Bleed’ (released 11 Oct) explores a sublime language of stillness. With a single\, 42-minute composition\, The Necks masterfully express the unspeakable beauty of decay and space in yet another totally distinct entry in a vast and stunning body of work. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Aquarius - a screening | Byron Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Aquarius is a documentary about dreamers\, tree-huggers and radical ratbags and the social and cultural exploration that changed a generation and implemented environmental change for the Northern Rivers. \nJoin us at Byron Theatre  for a special screening and Q & A for the film Aquarius .  There will be an introduction from the filmmakers and a post screening Q&A featuring members of the filmmaking team as well as original Aquarians live in person. \nIn May 1973\, when thousands of young people travelled the back roads of Northern NSW to camp and explore a new way of living at Nimbin Aquarius Festival\, something unexpected happened amongst all the bliss\, drugs and drama. An unprecedented 10\,000 artists\, activists\, hippies\, radical students\, gurus and visionaries arrived to a small diary farm for this 10 day gathering\, a gathering that birthed an irrepressible movement that may have been the much-needed blueprint for sustainable change. \nThrough extensive collaboration and hours of precious newly-uncovered footage\, the film directs our gaze to the Festival – its inception and its aftermath – and examines the power of that one event to continue to shape history. Aquarius is about the constant struggle between the establishment and the alternative\, between community and the individual. \nRecommended 15+ \nTICKETS \nTRAILER \nEvent Details \n6:00 pm – Venue doors and Bar open\n6:40 pm – Theatre doors open\n7:00 pm – Event begins\n9:30 pm – Event ends \n

SUMMARY:German Film Festival | Palace Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Palace\, in association with German Films\, will showcase the best contemporary German cinema direct from major festivals in Europe plus a selection from its German-speaking neighbours\, Austria and Switzerland. Here’s a sneak peek into the programme which will screen at Palace Cinemas 8 May – 28 May. \nAs a special presentation the highly acclaimed documentary Riefenstahl directed by celebrated filmmaker Andres Veiel will screen. Having gained unprecedented access to the private estate of 20th century filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl\, Veiel explores the legacy of the woman who became world-famous with her Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will. This insightful documentary draws on incredible archival material and footage from Riefenstahl\, who continually denied any close ties to the Nazi regime. \nArriving directly from the recent Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale)\, is Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay’s thriller Hysteria. A piercing reflection on the power of images and the dynamics of perception\, projection and social hysteria\, the film features one of European cinema’s rising stars Devrim Lingnau as an assistant director intern who is drawn into a dangerous game of secrets\, lies and paranoia. \nA sensation at last year’s Berlinale\, celebrated auteur Matthias Glasner’s compelling drama Dying assembles an all-star cast led by the incredible Lars Eidinger. Set between Berlin and Hamburg\, Eidinger stars as a successful\, middle-aged orchestra conductor negotiating the chaos of his volatile private life. Treading the line between drama\, tragedy and black humour\, Dying has been described as an indelible\, richly rewarding experience. \nEnchanting documentary Circusboy (Zirkuskind)\, direct from the 2025 Berlinale Generation K-Plus selection\, chronicles the lives of the Frank travelling circus family over one year\, capturing eleven-year-old Santino’s experience growing up among extended family and animals\, in a world of storytelling. \nFull program and tickets arriving early April.
