DESCRIPTION:Fiesta time is near! \nThe HSBC Spanish Film Festival presented by Palace at the Palace Cinema\, Byron Bay is on 21 June – 10 July with a fiesta of films awaiting. The curated line-up\, the festival’s largest yet\, features films from Spain and Latin America. \nThe delicious taste of this festival content will be headed by the centrepiece  The Teacher Who Promised The Sea  (El Maestro que Prometió el Mar)\, winner of  the Audience Prize at the 2024 Gaudí Awards. This acclaimed drama features Enric Auquer and Laia Costa\, and tells the true story of Antoni Benaiges\, a teacher who brought progressive teaching methods to a small village in 1930s Burgos. “This film is a thing of beauty.” El Diario \nThe Cine Latino selection includes A Ravaging Wind  (El viento que arrasa)\, a quietly powerful coming-of-age drama that explores a young woman’s path to change her fate. This Argentinian gem is from acclaimed writer/director Paula Hernandez.  And from Mexico comes Upon Open Sky  (A cielo abierto)\, a searing\, morally thorny tale is set in early 1990s Mexico\, about three siblings who embark on a  journey of revenge.from a screenplay by legendary Mexican scriptwriter Guillermo Arriaga.  The Movie Teller (La Contadora de Películas) is a moving tribute to cinema and the magical power of storytelling\, the star-studded new film from multi award-winning director Lone Scherfig  follows a young woman’s coming-of-age in the rugged heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert in 1966.

SUMMARY:The Wake | Brunswick Picture House
DESCRIPTION:An original musical about the Bruns Fishing Fleet. Directed by Ollie Heathwood\nA musical that answers the question “What happened to the fishing fleet in Brunswick Heads?” This exuberant and compelling play celebrates the days when the Co-op was a much-loved meeting place at the heart of the town. Wonderful true stories told by fishermen and Co-op workers are brought to life through songs\, stories\, and images on the big screen. \nResidents\, long term holidaymakers\, and tourists alike are filled with a sense of loss when they go to the marina in Brunswick Heads and see the empty shell of the buildings that once housed the vibrant Brunswick-Byron Fishermen’s Co-Op\, and the wonderful seafood and the fish and chip shop. People ask\, “Where has the fish and chip shop gone\, and why?” and “Why aren’t there any trawlers in Brunswick Heads any more?” \nMany of us have fond memories of taking friends\, family\, and visitors to eat fish and chips at the boat harbour. Many people still go there expecting to be able to throw vinegar-soaked chips to seagulls while they enjoy the beauty of the river and the boats. But sadly\, the Co-op is closed\, and the trawlers are gone. \nThe Wake celebrates and preserves the history of that place\, and the local fishing community whose lives centred around it. \nThis original musical will tell stories based on research and interviews with fishermen\, their families\, and workers at the Co-op. Performances will involve large screen projections\, professional musicians\, singers and actors on stage at the iconic Brunswick Picture House. The play will celebrate the role that the fishing fleet played in our community and tell the story of why there is no longer a fleet in Brunswick Heads. \nPerformances | Saturday 2pm and 7pm | Sunday 4pm and 7pm \nBUY TICKETS
