SUMMARY:A Monet in Murwillumbah: Sharing the National Collection
DESCRIPTION:Between 1890 and 1891\, Monet painted his Haystacks series exploring the nuances of light\, shade\, tone and colour across the seasons and at different times of the day. Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday] 1890 is a glorious work from this series\, filled with dazzling light and luminous colour. \nPurchased in 1979 by the National Gallery of Australia\, Canberra\,  Meules\, milieu du jour [Haystacks\, midday]\, is one of five works shared with the Tweed Regional Gallery as part of the National Gallery of Australia’s Sharing the National Collection initiative. The Sharing the National Collection initiative sees major works of art from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection exhibited across regional and suburban communities. \nThe Monet is available to view at the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah for the duration of 2024. \nJoining the Monet from Saturday 2 March 2024 are three works by iconic Australian artist Margaret Olley\, along with a painting by one of Olley’s favourite artists\, Giorgio Morandi. The additional four works from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection are on display at Tweed Regional Gallery until 2029. \nFor more information

SUMMARY:Buena Vista Social Club 25th Anniversary featuring Caribe
DESCRIPTION:The Byron Theatre is celebrating with one of Australia’s hottest Cuban bands this February when they celebrate one of the landmark music documentaries of all time. Directed by Wim Wenders\, Buena Vista Social Club documents a group of legendary Cuban musicians\, some as old as their nineties\, being brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder to record a CD that captured the flavour of a musical style all but forgotten in the west following Castro’s takeover of Cuba \nThe resulting film and album became classics and in 2003 the album was ranked number 260 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time\, one of only two albums on the list to be produced in a non-English speaking country. In 2022\, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry. \nThis special event features a screening of the film on the big screen at Byron Theatre\, followed by a special live performance by Caribé. \nCaribé is a melding of musicians and dancers from Sydney’s Cuban\, jazz and Latin communities. The music and choreography integrates elements of traditional Cuban dance and music with a modern jazz aesthetic. The show is an immersive experience combining incredible dancing\, chanting\, jazz-inspired compositions and archival footage of Cuban musicians. \n6.00 pm – Venue doors and bar open \n7.00 pm – Film Screening \n8.45 pm – Interval\n \n9.15 pm – Caribe Set\n \n10.30 pm – Event ends \nBOOK HERE for tickets.
