DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Name: Gabul Jagun – Carpet Snake Country\nArtist: Nickolla Clark\nDates: 25 June until 30 July 2022\nLocation: Lone Goat Gallery\, 28 Lawson St\, Byron Bay\nOpen: 10am until 4pm Wednesday to Saturdays\n \n\nNickolla Clark is a local Arakwal Bundjalung artist living and working on Country. Her exhibition ‘Gabul Jagun – Carpet Snake Country’ is a body of work showcasing aspects of Arakwal Country in the Byron Shire. \n‘Arakwal Jagun. My grandmother’s country from the Rainforest to the sea including the rivers\, sacred sites\, our creator and home Ironbark at Tallow Creek. This is ‘Gabul Jagun’\, Carpet Snake Country.’ \nMy practice highlights our important\, instinctive\, sacred connection to Country through key symbols\, features and knowledge that has been passed down through many generations. This practice has brought me closer to understanding and expressing the energy\, spirit\, cultural lore and stories from country and culture within each painting. \nThe exhibition explores my personal connection to the land and sea country with the many vibrant and subtle colours of my Country. The theme Gabul refers to my people’s totem\, the Carpet Snake. This is a good reflection on my heritage. Jagun is ‘Country’ which is fitting as all my artworks reflect the land in which we live and care for. \nThese pieces are a collection of my cultural expressions and I hope they evoke feelings of cultural insight and gratitude towards Country. The Bar Heather team\, who also own Byron’s favourite Luna Wine Store\, will be pulling out some special and rare bottles from their cellar for the night\, a taste of what is to come from their natural wine collection. \n“I am excited to experiment in the kitchen of friends in town and show people what to expect from Bar Heather once we open. What informs us in the kitchen is firstly what is in the glass and then we work back from there rather than the other way around. With some of the world’s most precious natural wines swirling in the glasses at Bar Heather\, the decision of what to cook opens up\, and Barrio’s charcoal isn’t a bad place to start”. – Chef Ollie Wong \nGuest Chef Ollie Wong (previously Ester\, Sixpenny\, Franklin\, Agrarian Kitchen and Quay) ’s BBQ menu takes inspiration from the fresh produce available in the Northern Rivers\, and dishes he has enjoyed along his journey.
