Welcome to Byron Bay Historical Society! We meet once a month at the Byron Services Club to plan historical projects to mark different aspects of the rich history of Byron Bay.

  • History of the Indigenous people – beginnings – up to the establishment of the Cape Byron Trust and Arakwal National park
  • History of European settlement – Captain Cook, escaped convicts, explorers, timber-getters, maritime trade, farmers, industries – NORCO, meatworks, whaling.
  • Arrival of new settlers: the – alternative – history – the surfers, hippies, New Agers etc; modern times, arts and culture; tourism?
  • Questions: Did Lord Byron the poet live here Is that why it is named. And why so many streets are named after poets and literary figures
  • Records: books, memoirs, articles, documents, pamphlets, histories; photographs; artefacts. Where are they kept Is there a Museum
  • Cultural life?
