6th May 2012

So why are we celebrating?

The Byron Bay Winter Whales Ocean Swim Classic was first held in 1988 and has been running annually ever since. Starting out with a very small number of ocean swimmers, "swimming for charity", the Winter Whales Ocean Swim has now over 1700 regular participants and the numbers continue to rise every year.

We now offer a choice of two swims - The Beach Hotel Ocean Swim Classic and the shorter Westpac Mini Swim, both finishing at Main Bach Byron Bay. Both swims are along a buoyed course with ample water safety provided.

The Ring Bearer- presented by wayfarers Australia Venue: Byorn Theatre

www.byroncentre.com.au 02 66856807

music drama based on Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, with music and adaptation by Wayfarers' director Judith Clingan AM.

This well-known story is set in Middle Earth, and is largely concerned with Hobbits.
Our telling begins when one such hobbit, Frodo Baggins, inherits a curious magical ring which renders the wearer invisible. When he reveals it to his friend Gandalf, the Wizard, he learns that it is the One Ring, lost many ages ago by the Dark Lord Sauron to the weakening of his great power. However Sauron seeks to reclaim his lost ring and take dominion over the lands of Middle Earth and his malevolent forces are even now bent on finding the One Ring for their dark master. Pitting themselves against him, a company of nine set out to destroy the ring by casting it back into the fires of Mount Doom whence it came - and by so doing bring peace once more to Middle Earth.
In our telling we also include parts of this tale that were omitted from the recent films, as well as adding music and dance to the poetry of Tolkien's great epic.

Direction is by Wayfarers members Raphaela Mazzone and Kia Moon.

The Mullum2Bruns Paddle is on again - Sun 27 May image

The third Mullum2Bruns Paddle is being held on Sunday 27 May 2012 as an eco-friendly family fun event, run by the community, for the community. Last year, 667 paddlers experienced the magical journey down the Brunswick River on a perfect warm winter’s day. We are expecting even more this year with the Paddle’s growing popularity and the addition of a new division. The main paddling events begin at Heritage Park in Mullumbimby and conclude at the Terrace in  Brunswick Heads, where live music, free paddle clinics, a duck race, raffle, BBQs and other fun entertain the crowds throughout the day in a festival atmosphere.

The Mullum2Bruns Paddle offers divisions for recreational and competitive paddlers of all ages and abilities. It's a great program!

  • The 10km Echo Fun Paddle invites residents and visitors of all ages to paddle down the river from Mullumbimby to Brunswick Heads in any non-motorised craft at their own pace. There will be a prize for the Best Decorated Craft so we are expecting some creative entries.
  • The 10km Hotel Brunswick Paddle Challenge is an open division and it’s always a close finish.
  • The 10km Print Rescue Stand Up Paddle Challenge tests the experienced stand up paddlers.
  • The shorter 1km Surf Lifesaving Club Board Challenge, in several divisions, takes off from Torakina and several relays for the nippers between the bridges are also included on the program.
  • A new Paddle 2 Fitness Extreme Challenge has been added this year. Paddlers will contest a 20km course from Brunswick to Mullumbimby and back again.

Last year there were  667 entries, so if you would like to stay in Brunswick Heads for the weekend, it would be advisable to book your accommodation as soon as possible.  Very limited kayak hire is available from local operators.

The event is once again being jointly staged by three high profile volunteer community groups: The Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Marine Rescue, Brunswick Surf Lifesaving Club and the Brunswick Visitor Centre, and funds raised on the day will be split between the three non-profit organisations.

Registration is essential. Online registrations are now open. Alternatively you can register on the day at Heritage Park Mullumbimby from 7.30am.

Please note: It is a requirement by law that all children in a kayak under 12 years wear a life jacket.

Back by popular demand, acclaimed pianist Kathy Selby returns to Byron to play works by Mendelssohn, Stravinsky and Chopin, with musicians of exceptional calibre:
Violinist Sophie Rowell, renowned for her chamber music prowess (First Violin Australian String Quartet 2006 – 11, Tankstream Quartet 2000 – 2006) ), and
Cellist Julian Smiles.(Goldner Quartet, Australian Ensemble, former principal cello Australian Chamber Orchestra).
Julian is one of Australia’s leading cellists. With a career based in chamber music, but extending with great success into solo as well as orchestral playing, his schedule sees him performing and recording extensively both in Australia and overseas. Julian plays on an 1827 Lorenzo Ventapane cello

There are few pianists in this country as thoroughly equipped to meet challenges as Kathy Selby does. She can flash over the keys with quicksilver speed and delicacy, punch out crisp staccato chords and sing with the sweetest cantabile tone as required.

Selby and Friends National series has earned an enviable reputation for the highest quality performances with an atmosphere of warmth and familiarity.
This concert encapsulates the chamber music experience: intimate, involving music among friends.

A baby is just the beginning. Motherhood is for life.

Motherhood The Musical is a hilarious, musical journey about the lives of four mums. There's Barb, an over-worked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five; Brooke, the lawyer, who works too much and barely sees her kids; Trisha, a single mum struggling to balance work, her family and her divorce; and finally Amy, the naive young woman about to have her first child.  As the three friends throw Amy a baby shower, the truth about motherhood (the good, the bad and the ugly) all come out into the open: the nappies, the dirty laundry, the lazy husbands, juggling the demands of children, a career and everything in between.

Written by the award-winning singer/songwriter Sue Fabisch, Motherhood The Musical has received rave reviews during its Australian tour. You'll love this joyous musical journey as it looks at the blessings and the perils of being a Mum. This is all about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears, all wrapped up into 90 minutes of great musical entertainment.

Byron Bay Writers Festival Contact Details:

www.byronbaywritersfestival.com.au

The Byron Bay Writers Festival had its beginnings in 1997, when a small group of locals led by Chris Hanley wondered whether authors might accept an invitation to spend a winter's weekend in Byron Bay. They did, and an audience of two hundred  locals enjoyed a gathering of fifty Australian writers. Since then, the Festival has grown from a single venue event to fill four huge marquees and venues around town and sells 45,000 individual tickets. The guest list now numbers more than one hundred and over the years the most significant and respected contemporary Australian writers have participated through lectures, lunches, panels, conversations, launches and readings.

The focus of the program is firmly on Australian writing, with recognition of our physical place in the world through the inclusion of Indonesian and Asian authors. The Byron Bay Writers Festival enjoys a close relationship with the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival and believes that through words and ideas, bridges are formed that cross cultures and schisms. Fundamentally, the Festival provides a forum for intelligent discussion and guests are invited to address the issues that matter to them as writers and which necessarily concern us all. It is a celebration of the vitality of thought and creativity with a healthy emphasis on fun.

The Byron Bay Writers Festival is organised by the staff and Committee of the Northern Rivers Writers' Centre, a member based organisation receiving core funding from Arts NSW.
